final #3

Jackson Mealman

Last year many students around ONW didn’t know about S.I.D or what S.I.D was.

This year the whole school knows what S.I.D is and what the class does.

Many students know what S.I.D is this year but in years past many students didn’t know what it was.

Connor Gerdes who is one of the original S.I.D students has learned many things about the class and filming.

“ S.I.D stands for sports information director” Connor Gerdes says.

S.I.D is one of the six strands in the e-communication department and is the only department that covers the schools sports.

“ It’s a class where we write about sports stories and then go a film the sports here we have at the school and then turn them into sports packages that feature on Game Day Northwest” Gerdes says.

S.I.D does a good job at covering all the sports in the school and not just the big ones.

“ S.I.D covers all Fall, Winter, and Spring sports which include football, basketball, baseball, and track and all the other sports at the school” Gerdes says.

S.I.D is the new strand of the e-communication department and isn’t very old. This is the second year of it and the students in the strand love it.

S.I.D has lots of fun parts about from filming and watching sports of the school.

“My favorite part is getting to work with sports and filming them. I’ve got to commentate games before and making videos about sports” Gerdes says.

Many of the people in S.I.D play sports but you don’t have to play sports to take this class you just have to have a passion for sports.

“ The people are cool, they are all my friends, we all have the same interest in sports, and we all get along really well”.

This year has been a good one for the S.I.D students and next year the students are looking to an even bigger challenge with there being more Game Day shows and many more broadcast going on.

The planning of the next big thing

5... 4... 3... 2... 1 those are the words you hear when a show ONW Now is about to start filming.

But, what goes into planning a news package? It's not just a camera and pushing record. There is a lot of planning that goes into making a video package that is worth watching and keeps your viewer interested.

"Making a package is no easy task, it takes patience, time, and effort. People think all you do is push record and that's it," Connor Bickford said.

Pre-planning a video package requires looking up information on your topic, sitting down with your interviewee, and establishing a relationship with them.

"You don't want to meet the person you're going to interview the day of, because then it will be awkward for them, you, and the viewer," Bickford said.

Also you must work around your interviewee's schedule, and have questions prepared ahead of time, do not expect to go into the interview and wing it.

Shot planning is one of the most important things to do on a video package. For example, if you are doing a package about a student who is in a advanced art class, you will want to get a lot of close-ups of the persons hand, paint brush, there art piece. Even there face so people can see who you are doing the package over.

"Wide shots are not good shots to use in most cases. A close up and medium shot are the best to use, because they give off a vibe that is more emotional to the viewer. A good package has creative shots and a emotional appeal to its viewer," Sean McPartland said.

If you want to create a great package you have to put time and effort into it and have a creative idea to go with your work ethic.

Growing from experience ONW... Now

"Welcome to a brand new edition of ONW Now! I’m your host Luis Ruiz for today’s show, so let’s get started,"

At Olathe Northwest the students hear those sentences every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. People enjoy the show and have high praise for the ones who anchor, because it takes a lot to stand in front of a camera and report on-going events at school.

ONW Now is a student led show where they produce packages about on-going school events and they try to interact with the other students.

“People that watch the show may think it is not hard to stand in front of the camera and speak words. I've never been on the show but I believe it is difficult, because when people are hosting you have to show emotion and annunciate your words, and not move around a lot.” Solomon Shields said.

Olathe Northwest is not the only school that has a daily show, but from peoples opinions they say Olathe Northwest has the better show because it is more interactive and entertaining.

“I appreciate ONW Now because we are like a mini-news station and Sportscenter. Yeah, it is not the best hosting, but we are teenagers and it is cool to see people do that,” Logan Contino said.

ONW Now does not just do a certain kind of package, but a variety of them. For example, they have done packages over Mrs. Rippe, A&E, the Colin Couch story, etc. They make packages that matter and touch people emotionally.

“The ideas for packages are really cool and funny: Word from the halls, prop box, and the one about A&E, since I am in A&E it is cool to see that people recognize us,” Jack Perkins said.

From last year to this year, ONW Now has transformed a lot. One being completely new host(s) and setup. Another, being a whole new approach on how the show is set to be done. A lot more interaction with students and teachers.

"You can definitely see a huge improvement from the beginning of the year to now. ONW Now is a lot better than it was from last year. Last year was just to bland and nothing interesting. But this year, my class we watch all of them and we see the difference. ONW is now worth watching," Perkins said.

Although, ONW Now and Gameday are no CBS news or Sportscenter, they are good shows and entertaining, because young kids of today are aspiring to become better at hosting and producing. It is amazing to see teenagers produce a show and packages by themselves.

So that is all we have for you today, this has been Luis Ruiz, now back to the desk.
